Better Sleep for Better Healing: How Quality Rest Supports Eczema Recover
If your child has eczema, you know how tough bedtime can be. The constant itching, tossing, and scratching can make it nearly impossible for them (and you!) to get a good night’s sleep. Worse yet, all that nighttime scratching can damage their skin, leading to more irritation, inflammation, and even infections—preventing the healing process from truly taking place.
We’ve been there, and we know how heartbreaking it is to watch your little one struggle. That’s why we’re sharing practical, tried-and-tested ways to minimise scratching, improve sleep, and give your child’s skin the chance to heal.
1. Dress Smart: Soft, Breathable, and Protective Clothing
What your child wears to bed can make a world of difference. Many traditional fabrics can be rough, trap heat, and irritate sensitive skin. Instead, opt for:
- OEKO-TEX certified bamboo – This ultra-soft, breathable fabric is naturally hypoallergenic, temperature-regulating, and gentle on delicate skin.
- 100% mulberry silk – This luxurious fabric reduces friction, preventing irritation and flare-ups.
- Scratch-proof designs – Look for clothing with built-in mitts and fold-over cuffs (like our Honey & Stitch sleepwear!) to keep little hands from causing damage while they sleep.
By choosing the right materials, you can create a protective barrier that helps reduce irritation and keep eczema-prone skin calm overnight.
2. Keep Hands Covered to Prevent Damage
Even if your child falls asleep peacefully, their natural response to itching can still cause damage while they sleep. Scratch mitts and fold-over cuffs are a lifesaver, acting as a gentle barrier to protect their skin from their tiny nails.
For older kids, if they’re reluctant to wear them, turning it into a "superpower sleep challenge" might help!
3. Pre-Bedtime Prep: Hydrate and Soothe the Skin
A consistent nighttime skincare routine can help reduce itching and flare-ups before bed. Here’s a simple routine to try:
- Lukewarm bath – Skip the hot water (it dries out the skin!) and opt for a short, lukewarm soak with an eczema-friendly bath oil or wash.
- Lock in moisture – Right after bath time, apply a generous layer of moisturiser while the skin is still damp.
- Target itchy spots – If needed, apply any prescribed creams or ointments to help soothe stubborn flare-ups before dressing for bed.
4. Keep the Sleeping Environment Cool & Calm
Overheating is one of the biggest triggers for eczema itching, so creating a cool and calming bedtime environment can make all the difference.
- Adjust room temperature – Keep it between 18-22°C (65-72°F) to prevent overheating.
- Choose breathable bedding – Opt for lightweight, natural fabrics like bamboo or cotton for sheets, pajamas, and sleep sacks.
5. Trim Nails Short to Minimise Damage
Even with the best precautions, some scratching may still happen. Keeping nails short and smooth helps reduce the risk of cuts, infections, and long-term skin damage. If your little one refuses a nail trim, try doing it after a bath when their nails are softer or while they’re asleep for a stealthy trim!
The Bottom Line: Better Sleep = Better Healing
When eczema sleeps, the whole family sleeps. By taking small steps like choosing eczema-friendly clothing, covering little hands, and creating a soothing bedtime routine, you can help your child get the rest they need to heal and grow.
At Honey & Stitch, we know this journey firsthand. That’s why we created our eczema-friendly sleepwear—to give parents peace of mind and little ones the best chance to sleep comfortably without scratching.
